Two Scottish restaurants gain AA Rosettes - including ‘unrivalled’ island destination

The latest restaurants to gain an AA Rosette have been announced, and two are in Scotland.

The AA has announced the full list of autumn 2025 rosette winners, which includes restaurants London, Cumbria, Yorkshire and Scotland.

According to the AA, the long-established AA Rosettes for culinary excellence “celebrate successful cooking at different levels across the UK.”

They are awarded by the AA's team of inspectors with their wealth of experience in assessing quality, receiving this award is a significant achievement in this industry and beyond.

What are AA Rosettes?

Launched in 1956 by the AA as a guide to travelling to good places to eat (much like the Michelin Guide), the AA Rosette inspectors assess the quality of food served by restaurants and hotels across the UK.

AA Rosettes range from five to one, with Scotland having one five and six four AA Rosettes awarded restaurants.

Establishments with three AA Rosettes are all outstanding restaurants achieving standards which demand national recognition well beyond their local area, while those awarded four AA Rosettes are considered among the top restaurants in the country.

Two AA Rosettes are awarded to excellent restaurants that aim for and achieve high standards and consistency in their cooking, with obvious attention to detail to the selection of quality ingredients.

One AA Rosette is given to restaurants that achieve standards that stand out in their local area. AA inspectors will note that 'they serve food prepared with care, understanding and skill, using good quality ingredients.'

The two Scottish restaurants awarded rosettes for autumn 2025 are HAAR in St Andrews, Fife, which was awarded 4 Rosettes and the Three Chimneys on Skye, which now has 3 AA Rosettes.

Dean Banks, chef patron of HAAR said: “Haar is special so being awarded four rosettes there means so much to the team and I, although of course I’m proud of the entire group.

“Haar is my baby, the flagship, the one that defines and sums up everything about me and my approach to all of this. It’s the absolute expression of me as a chef.

“That’s why I wanted rooms there – the idea I had was people are coming to my house for dinner and staying overnight. They’re guests in my home.

“I designed it all, my wife Isabela and son Felix have created a lot of the artworks there, my son Francisco and I did a lot of the physical work together on the renovations and changes.

“It’s a very special place and I think it’s a different kind of restaurant, so seeing it recognised in this way means the world.”

The Three Chimneys and the House Over-By, which has been described as ‘unrivalled’ has been a must-visit on the island since it opened in the 80s.

The AA inspectors called the food stunning, writing: “A visit to The Three Chimneys will make a trip to Skye even more memorable. The stunning food is the result of a deft approach using quality local ingredients, with lasting relationships forged with local fishermen and family crofters—some of whom the restaurant has partnered with for decades.

“Breakfast is served in the main restaurant and includes two courses, with fresh juices complementing a delightful mix of local fish, meats, and cheeses.

“Bedrooms, in the House Over-By, are creative and thoughtfully equipped – all have spacious en suites, wonderful views across Loch Dunvegan, and direct access to the garden and down to the shore too. Five of the six rooms are split-level; the other is on one level and features a walk-in shower.
