It’s one of the nation’s favourite takeaways, but which fish and chip shops are the best in the country?
The end of February sees the annual National Fish and Chip Awards take place at a ceremony in London, and this year three Scottish businesses were named at the awards.
The awards, which are now in their 37th year, celebrates and highlights the best of the fish and chip industry across the country in 15 categories including sustainability and customer service.
The awards ceremony took place in London and was hosted by TV presenter Matt Baker and sponsored by Seafood from Norway.
While the Yarm Road Fish and Chips in Darlington, County Durham, took home the coveted Takeaway of the Year award, The Fish Works in Largs took second place.
The Field to Frier award went to Redcloak Fish Bar in Stonehaven and the Drywite Young Fish Frier of the Year went to Glen Morrison from the Garioch Fish Bar in Inverurie.
Posting on their social media, the team at Redcloak wrote: "We O-fish-ally serve the UK’s best chips 🤩🍟
We are delighted to have been crowned Field to Frier champions this year at the National Fish & Chip Awards.
"Thank you to our fantastic customers and the brilliant community of Stonehaven for your support."
While the team at Fish Works Largs wrote: "We Did It! 🏆 We are absolutely delighted to announce that The Fish Works has been awarded 2nd place in the UK at the National Fish & Chip Awards – Takeaway of the Year! Not only that, but we’ve also been crowned Scotland’s Best Fish & Chip Shop for the 3rd year in a row!"
Andrew Crook, president of the National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF), said: “On behalf of the NFFF, I’d like to say a big ‘congratulations’ and ‘thank you’ to these businesses for being shining examples of greatness in the fish and chip industry.”
Victoria Braathen, UK director of the Norwegian Seafood Council, added: "We look forward to welcoming the winners on our annual study trip in June, where they’ll experience first-hand how Norwegian cod and haddock are responsibly caught in Norway’s cold, clear waters.”
