Popular Scots BBQ restaurant and cocktail bar to close with immediate effect

A Thai BBQ restaurant and bar has shut down.

A city centre Thai restaurant, which recently shifted its focus to BBQ food and transformed its bar area into Scotland’s first listening bar, has closed with immediate effect.

As reported in GlasgowWorld, Mamasan in Glasgow’s city centre launched in 2020 after a £500,000 investment in the building on the corner of Ingram Street, opposite Royal Exchange Square.

Founder Brad Stevens exited Bar Soba Group in 2019 to establish Pizza Punks which has restaurants in Glasgow, Belfast, Newcastle, Leeds, Liverpool and Nottingham.

In March this year Mamasan reinvented itself as an audio bar, following a comprehensive hi-fi overhaul and the installation of a bespoke, state-of-the-art sound system designed by sound engineers to elevate late-night cocktails and dining to an unparalleled auditory experience - a first for Scotland.

With DJs from Belle & Sebastian and Sub Club signed up to play, Mamasan entered a ‘new era’ as the country’s first dedicated listening bar.

This coincided with a new barbecue menu, which was a collaboration between Scottish chef Finn Steel-Perkins and Great British Menu star, Ali Borer. The business was revamped after a £150,000 investment by owner Brad Stevens.

At the time of this revamp, Brad Stevens said: “When Mamasan opened in 2020, our vision was to create a stylish dining concept that was as much about the drinks and music as the food.

“Due to the restrictions in place throughout the pandemic, we couldn’t finish the job we started. Now our new state-of-the-art sound equipment, combined with incredible Thai BBQ food and drinks means we’ve elevated the guest experience and we can’t wait for Glasgow to join us at Scotland’s first dedicated listening bar for an outstanding line-up of music.”

The building Mamasan is located in - which also houses Glasgow’s Emporio Armani store  - is up for sale and has been listed by Savills. The fashion brand relocated to Ingram Street in 2016.
