Popular Aberdeen ice cream parlour Mackie’s 19.2 set to reopen next month

A popular Scottish ice cream parlour has announced its planned date for reopening.

Mackie’s 19.2 will  reopen its doors on 1 July for takeaway and delivery - and there will be a full new menu of ice creams, waffles, crepes and hot drinks.

The outlet, in Aberdeen's Marischal Square, will be operating a takeaway only system at the premises, and a delivery service in association with Deliveroo.

The parlour was the brand's first retail venture and is set to be the first establishment to reopen in the Marischal Square development.

What's on the menu?

Mackie’s 19.2 will open with a brand new menu offering new ice cream sundaes, crepes and waffles along with a take home tub option – a ‘mix and match’ of scoops from the parlour’s hand made range of ice creams, several of which are unique to the parlour.

With no tables and chairs, and a limited number of customers within the store at any one time, physical distancing will be further aided by a new one way system, making use of the two separate doorways, which will be designated as the entrance and exit.

The parlour will be open from 2pm-9pm seven days a week and this means that four of the team of staff will be able to return to work, including the two full-time managers and two part-time members of staff.

Parlour manager, Yvette Harrison helped open the parlour in 2017 and is now delighted to be reopening. She is working hard to ensure that the establishment will be safe and feel safe for customers.

Yvette said: “It is very exciting, I’m really looking forward to being open again. It’s difficult to know how it will work out – but we hope people will enjoy being able to come and get an ice cream treat again over the summer.

"We have missed our customers, many of whom regularly come and visit us in the parlour. We are looking forward to welcoming them back to 19.2 parlour.

"We will adapt to whatever the best advice is to operate safely in these times, and I’ve done quite a bit of work planning out the best way to serve and have an efficient flow of customers through the parlour.

"We will install screens and use visors when serving customers, which will certainly seem strange to begin with, but we’re doing our best for the safety of our staff team as well as our customers.

"We are lucky that we can offer a covered courtyard area (with the fantastic Leopard sculpture) in addition to being beside the landscaped gardens with seating – so people can linger safely to enjoy their takeaway ice cream cones.

"The reopening will coincide with a new-menu at the parlour which will feature some new and exciting combinations, as well as some old favourites.

"We believe the new menu will have something for everyone and I’m looking forward to the reaction to a new Biscoff sauce in our everflowing taps, the chocolate taps are one of the unique features in the parlour.”

Family business

The Aberdeenshire family business (whose Westertown Farm is 19.2 miles away – hence the naming of the parlour) has been able to continue producing ice cream on the farm, having implemented suitable social distancing and hygiene procedures.

Production of the five litre scooping tubs and handmade flavours have been on hold during lockdown but the team are busy making the first selection of flavours to be ready in time for re-opening the Aberdeen parlour in addition to meeting demand from some of their  customers, who are now also making plans to re-open.
