Outlander star Sam Heughan reveals Sassenach whisky release date

Sam Heughan, star of the hugely popular television series Outlander, has revealed the release date of Sassenach whisky.

The star tweeted about Sassenach whisky on Saturday 25 January, saying: "Happy #BurnsDay from sunny CA!!! I’m proud to announce the Limited Edition –  @SassenachSpirit Whisky.

"Available US March 2nd 2020 followed by EU and Canada. Limited 'Burns Night' release available NOW in CA, I can’t wait for you to try it! Slainte!"

He announced in August last year that he would be launching a whisky, after setting up his own company.

The Scottish actor, who plays Jamie Fraser on the show, posted a unicorn logo on his Instagram account with the tagline – “The Sassenach”.

As fans will know, Sassenach is a nod to the nickname Sam’s character Jamie has given his on-screen love interest Claire on the show, with the term originating in the Highlands and originally used in Gaelic-speaking circles to describe the English, or in some cases lowland Scots.

The tweet also shows, for the first time, what the bottle and packaging will look like. The sleek bottle has a black and gold label, which says "The Sassenach, blended Scotch whisky - spirit of home."

The limited Burns night run is for sale in California only, for now, with the whisky described as being: "Inspired by the Highland landscape, the Sassenach is a uniquely blended Scotch whisky with a distinct character and smooth flavour, suitable for any occasion.

"Ancient peaks, hidden glens, and rising morning mist, freshwater and firm oak run deep in its veins. Matured in casks that previously held fine Madeira wine, the exceptional blend has an underlying rich character that rises to the forefront."
