Skye's Kinloch Lodge named on Conde Nast Traveller's Gold List for 2023

Kinloch Lodge, the Isle of Skye’s award-winning family-run hotel and restaurant, has been named on the Conde Nast Traveller Gold List for 2023.

The list is the Conde Nast Traveller's annual edit of the best hotels in the world, and is judged on service, attitude and design.

There are just three UK hotels included in this year’s list, The Newt in Somerset, London’s Goring Hotel, and Kinloch Lodge – the only Scottish entry.

Writing about this year’s Gold List, Divia Thani, Conde Nast’s Global Editorial Director, said: “Our Gold List hotels are not just places to sleep, they imbibe their location’s soul.”

Kinloch Lodge, on the Sleat Peninsula has always had a keen sense of place and a rich history.

The restaurant, overseen by head chef Jordan Webb, has an ethos of seasonal and sustainable food, prioritising local suppliers and ingredients from Skye’s natural larder, while the hotel itself feels more like a family home.

Commenting on their addition to the coveted list, Isabella Macdonald, the Lodge's manager, said: “We are overjoyed that we have been included on the Gold List.

"We pride ourselves on a spirit of absolute comfort and relaxed luxury in the most magical natural surroundings, and we are so pleased that the editors at Condé Nast Traveller have experienced it too. What a brilliant way to cap off our 50th year.”

2022 marked Kinloch Lodge’s Golden Anniversary, and to celebrate, a cookbook was published earlier this year.

50 Years – Kinloch Lodge includes recipes by Chef Jordan Webb and Claire Macdonald and essays by Skye and Edinburgh-based author Alisha Fernandez Miranda.

Part family-memoir, part love letter to Skye, its landscapes and its people, the cookbook has recipes as well as vignettes of the hotel’s history and heritage, interviews with local producers, tips on foraging and much, much more.

Kinloch Lodge first welcomed guests in 1972, and was opened by Isabella’s parents, Lord Godfrey Macdonald, High Chief of Clan Donald, and his wife Lady Claire Macdonald, the award-winning cookery writer and author.

From day one, Claire pioneered an approach to hotel food, with local and seasonal produce used – long before they became the buzzwords they are today - while Godfrey’s genial welcome and hospitality ensured that guests returned year-after-year, many becoming life-long friends.
