Outlander star Sam Heughan to host virtual Cinco de Mayo event

The actor will be live on socials to celebrate next month.

Outlander star Sam Heughan is inviting fans to virtually celebrate Cinco de Mayo with him next month.

The actor is going live on Instagram on 5 May, and is encouraging fans to join him and toast the day with his recently launched Sassenach Select tequila.

In a post to followers, the Sassenach Select team wrote: "It's time to get your bottle of award-winning Sassenach Select!

"Cinco de Mayo is around the corner and in celebration of this very special day, Sam Heughan will be live on Instagram for a toast and a sip (or three)

"Join us on Thursday May 5th at 1PM PST / 4PM EST / 9PM BST and enjoy a sip of the Sassenach Select."

Sassenach Select is an award-winning tequila that launched earlier this year.

The Sassenach Select Double Wood Reposado tequila came about after Heughan took a trip to Mexico and realised that in the UK, we don't have the same appreciation of the drink as elsewhere in the world.

Speaking to Forbes at the time of launch, Heughan also commented on the similarities he found between Scotland and Mexico, making this a natural next release from the Sasseanch Spirits brand, and a follow on from the award-winning The Sassenach whisky which launched in 2020 and is now back on sale in the UK.

In late 2020 Sam Heughan joined us on our podcast Scran to chat about his whisky, as well as why he chose a blend over a single malt, how it was almost made in America and his re-discovered love of Scotland through filming Outlander.

The actor also hinted at what other drinks may be released, saying: "In the future, I think we're going to start looking at other innovative spirits, whether it's whisky or something else.

"But I think a single grain (whisky) is definitely a route we want to look at as well, because they're so good - and probably the majority of what I'm drinking right now."

Cinco de Mayo is an annual celebration held on May 5, which commemorates the anniversary of Mexico's victory over the French Empire at the Battle of Puebla in 1862.

Known for cake making, experimental jam recipes, Champagne, whisky and gin drinking (and the inability to cook Gnocchi), Rosalind is the Food and Drink Editor and whisky writer for The Scotsman, as well as hosting Scran, The Scotsman's food and drink podcast.
