Many businesses may make the move to offering a takeaway service, which was a success for some during the nationwide lockdown that started in March.

What are the new restrictions?

Announcing changes to coronavirus measures in Holyrood, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said that indoor hospitality venues will only be allowed to operate between 6am and 6pm daily, selling food and non-alcoholic drinks only.

Outdoor bars, restaurants and cafes will be allowed to remain open up until 10pm and will be allowed to sell alcohol up to that time.

However, all licensed premises in the Greater Glasgow and Clyde, Lanarkshire, Ayrshire and Arran, Lothian and Forth Valley health board areas will be closed for both indoor and outdoor operations.

Cafes without a licence to sell alcohol will be allowed to open until 6pm, Nicola Sturgeon said, to counter social isolation.

Advice for businesses going into takeaway

Lee Bandoni who runs the Aldwych Cafe in Glasgow had this advice for those moving into a takeaway service: “Restaurants that haven’t moved to takeaway yet will need to be prepared for a big change because takeaway is a completely different beast to covers.

"You’ll have to expect a lot of questions about how the food is prepared and the packaging that’s used. However, the transformation is worth it as the short term pain is for long term prosperity.

"Once the coronavirus is over, the takeaway industry is going to prosper but those restaurants and takeaways that don’t innovate will suffer.

“But when making the change you need to think very carefully about who to partner with. In the last lockdown, we had to scale more in two weeks than the previous two years. Just Eat and Uber Eats simply don’t give you the support, the speed to react or local knowledge that you need.

"With Just Eat we had to change prices three or four times because of the errors they kept making on the menu. Having access to the backend makes it so much easier for us to be flexible.”

Fionn Hart, UK country manager at Flipdish added: “Switching to a takeaway service is the best way restaurants, bars and pubs across central Scotland can sustain revenues during the incoming lockdown.

"Whilst many made this transition quickly earlier this year, sadly it was at the expense of their long-term prospects. Establishments that jumped into bed with third-party delivery companies, like Just Eat, Deliveroo and Uber Eats, will be bled dry by high commission fees in the long run.

“If Scots want their favourite restaurants to survive, the best way to support them is to order direct so more of the money stays with the business.

"If marketplaces insist on taking such high commissions, we urge for more transparency to help consumers actively choose how they order food online and who profits most.”
