Organisers of the awards, Restaurant magazine said: “The quality of the fish and shellfish served at Roy Brett’s Edinburgh flagship Ondine is second to none.

"It’s therefore no surprise that the restaurant has become something of an institution in the Scottish capital. The sleek space accentuates a sense of both class and luxury that’s also felt in Brett’s cooking. A ‘proper seafood restaurant’ is how Brett describes his place and it’s hard to argue with him.”

Despite a huge number of London restaurant, this year actually saw the highest number located outside of the English capital, with 46 out of 100 on the list. Out of this there were 23 Scottish and Northern Irish restaurants named.

Moor Hall in Lancashire took the top spot. The Grade II listed restaurant with rooms, in Aughton, Lancashire, is overseen by chef-patron Mark Birchall and has built a strong reputation for its modern British cuisine using, where possible, produce grown on the five-acre estate.
