With the sound of wedding bells being drowned out with the sound of bills tallying up, new research has revealed that over 80 per cent of Brits are seeking new ways to save on wedding essentials.

With the average wedding cake price sitting at over £500, this traditional treat is one that is seen as a ripe for cost saving and baking ingredient specialists Stork has launched a limited-edition DIY ‘bake by numbers’ wedding cake kit for under £50.

Available on online retailer Amazon, the firm say the limited edition ‘semi-naked’ design was selected as more than half (54 per cent) of Brits are ditching traditional favourite fruitcake, in favour of the modern designs.

The celebratory cake serves up to 70 guests – a cost-effective 70p per person – and comes "complete with everything a beginner baker needs in order to create a three-tier show stopping centrepiece".

A spokesperson for Stork said: "From equipment to ingredients – already weighed out for you, with faux flowers to finish in this year’s trending colour palette, ‘Love Bloom’. The botanical-inspired wedding colour combo blends graceful light pink tones, earthy greens, and cosy neutrals. The end result: a palette that embodies pure, effortless romance fit for a wedding."

Stork’s DIY ‘Bake by Numbers’ Wedding Cake Kit consists of:
