The whisky has notes of chocolate, spices, fruitcake but a freshness from apple-y notes and a lingering dry finish likely due to its age. It’d make an ideal old fashioned or boulevardier but it’s an elegant sipping dram no matter the time of year.

For something a bit different, buy Tamdhu’s charitable Atlantic Salmon Trust whisky exclusively at Waitrose (£50/70cl) and a donation is given to the charity for every bottle sold.

If you’re buying for an Outlander fan who also loves whisky, surely there’s no better gift than Jamie Fraser’s whisky?

Launched in the UK in 2020, the whisky is a nod to the nickname Sam Heughan’s character Jamie has given his on-screen love interest Claire on the show.

The Sassenach is a blend that is made by Loch Lomond Whiskies for Sam Heughan. In late 2020 Sam Heughan joined us on our podcast Scran to chat about his whisky, as well as why he chose a blend over a single malt, how it was almost made in America and his re-discovered love of Scotland through filming Outlander.

Known for cake making, experimental jam recipes, Champagne, whisky and gin drinking (and the inability to cook Gnocchi), Rosalind is the Food and Drink Editor and whisky writer for The Scotsman, as well as hosting Scran, The Scotsman's food and drink podcast.
