The finalists in the sixth annual Scottish Beer Awards have been announced.

In total, 28 breweries and 233 beers all brewed in Scotland have progressed to the finals of the Scottish Beer Awards, which is sponsored by Aldi.

The awards programme is the largest independent assessment of the Scottish brewing sector ever created and the results provide an important indicator into the quality of Scottish beer and the financial performance of Scotland’s booming brewing businesses.

306 beers were marked across a range of quality standards as part of a wide-ranging blind tasting assessed by 34 judges.

The judging day event, which took place in Edinburgh, was managed by the international sensory management consultancy, Cara Technology.

Stewart Brewing has 23 beers in the finals, while Aberdeen’s Fierce Beer has 21 beers and Williams Bros Brewing has 18 beers in the final line up. All the winners will be announced at an event in Glasgow in October.

The Scottish Beer Awards programme is chaired by Hilary Jones, former Quality Director of S&N.

She said: “To make it to the finals of any beer awards which are conducted as blind tasting is a huge achievement.

"Beers must be marked consistently highly, and I'm delighted to say that around 60 per cent of the beers entered this year were scored very highly indeed.

"This percentage has risen year on year since the competition began in 2016, and, complemented by the business awards, shows clearly the strength and health of the brewing industry in Scotland.

"This is particularly impressive considering what the whole industry has been through in the last couple of years.”

Graham Nicolson, group buying director of Aldi Scotland, who sponsor the awards added: “Despite the challenges of the last year, The Scottish Beer Awards proves that Scotland’s beer industry continues to thrive.

"We are very proud at Aldi to support brewers and their continued success particularly after the challenges of the last year.

"The quality of the beer produced in Scotland is world class and will continue to dominate our selection, particularly as part of our regular Scottish Beer Festivals. We wish all the finalists the very best of luck in this year’s competition.”

All medal winners and business award winners will be announced at an industry event and beer-paired dinner on Friday 8 October at the Glasgow Doubletree by Hilton hotel.
