National Hot Chocolate Day falls on 31 January, giving those with a sweet tooth the perfect excuse to indulge in a warming mug of hot chocolate from one of these independent businesses in Scotland.

Here we take a look at some of the best cafes in Scotland offering a selection of decadent hot chocolate, some of which are doing takeaway.

Honeycomb & Co

Try the bruleed orange hot chocolate, which is a limited edition offering for takeaway from this Edinburgh cafe.

It features 70 per cent cocoa Dominican chocolate, chocolate orange ganache and a Terry’s Chocolate Orange segment. Yes please.

The Marshmallow Lady

Try a Luxurious Hot Chocolate from this Edinburgh cafe and look forward to The Marshmallow Lady’s own gourmet toasted mallow fluff (or cream), as well as chocolate flakes from local chocolatier Edward & Irwyn.

Mimi’s Bakehouse

A much loved spot in the capital for cake fans, Mimi's has a minty hot chocolate that is  available as a special from Mimi’s original Leith branch (they’re now also at Corstorphine, as well as the City Arts Centre, Royal Mile and Lauriston).

Highland Chocolatier

Probably one of Scotland's best known chocolatiers, Iain Burnett's Highland Chocolatier cafe is an ideal pit stop for those looking to indulge in a hot chocolate.

Selling a classic with whipped cream or an intense ganache style, customers can also try some of Iain's award-winning chocolates with their drink.

While the shop and cafe are closed, orders are still being taken online for sweet treats to enjoy at home.

Cocoa Tree Cafe

This charming cafe, found within the Pittenweem Chocolate Company in Fife offers a range of handmade chocolates as well as lunch and drinks.

Old Course Hotel launches West Deck - a new rooftop bar and restaurant with dining pods

In nice weather customers can enjoy the small courtyard for an al fresco drink or, if it's chilly, stay warm by the fire with one of their many hot chocolate options.

While restrictions are still in place, order online to enjoy at home.

Kaf

This tiny cafe in Glasgow's west end offers excellent coffee and a lovely hot chocolate too.

Customers in Glasgow can order online for collection from the cafe, which is on Hyndland Street.

Loop and Scoop

Another Glasgow favourite, Loop and Scoop is, in normal times, a buzzing place to enjoy ice cream and churros.

Aberdeen's Foodstory cafe is known for its lovely lunches, sourdough bread and sweet treats and is a must visit for those that love hot chocolate.

Currently offering takeaway for locals, their menu can be viewed online.
