Glazed, filled, sugar-dusted or even vegan - Edinburgh has more independent doughnut shops than anywhere else in the country.

The Kilted Donut sells a wide range of creative ring and filled doughnuts, with some Scotland-inspired ones such as the 'Fiery Scotch Bonnet' and the 'Cranachan'.

A Leith institution, The Sicilian Pastry Shop are experts in all kinds of baking, but their Italian cartocci are especially delicious.
Filled with crema (Italian-style confectioner's custard) a cartoccio and a cup of coffee is the best way to start the day.

The trendy Baba Budan specialises in cracking coffee and delicious homemade doughnuts near Waverley Station.
Flavours rotate seasonally, but in the past they have included the likes of chocolate and ginger, strawberry mousse and dark chocolate marshmallow.

Recently opened in Sciennes, Considerit are an entirely plant-based operation, serving up completely vegan doughnuts in all kinds of indulgent flavours.
They're adding new and exciting flavours all the time, from toasted coconut and ginger to spiced apple crumble.
Don't let the vegan label scare you - these are some of the best in the city.

Specialising in doughnuts, bagels and coffee, The Bearded Baker stuffs his traditional sugared doughnuts with jam, Biscoff spread, chocolate and lots more.
If you can't make it down to his Rodney Street store, he also supplies other local cafes, including Filament Coffee and Leo's Beanery.

Plump, perfectly formed and packed with a choice of interesting fillings, Twelve Triangles' signature doughnuts are baked fresh with regularly changing flavours.
Expect everything from passion fruit ricotta and chocolate peanut butter to the classic raspberry jam.
Twelve Triangles now has shops in Leith, Portobello and , but make sure to arrive as early as possible to avoid disappointment - these doughnuts sell out fast.
