Lidl to open store in the former Whole Foods site in Giffnock

Supermarket chain Lidl has announced that it will open a store in the former Whole Foods site in Giffnock as part of its ongoing expansion plans in Scotland.

The brand confirmed that it has agreed contracts with Whole Foods Market and the landlord to occupy the unit, with the goal to refurbish and open for trade later this year.

Lidl will be installing a bespoke in-store bakery to complement their industry-leading value for money product range and will be creating up to 40 new jobs with the opening of the store.

Lidl UK’s Regional head of property, Gordon Rafferty commented: “We are delighted to be opening a new store in Giffnock, marking another milestone in our ambitious store expansion programme.

"We’ve seen incredible demand for Lidl stores across Scotland and look forward to offering our quality products and incredible value to shoppers throughout the local area.

“We are firmly committed to helping boost the local economy by creating new jobs and working with local suppliers in the development of the new store."

The planned store in Giffnock will add to Lidl’s existing store portfolio in the UK of over 700 stores, and will form part of the company’s growth plans which will see it open up to 60 new stores a year across the UK.

"Giffnock is a location we have sought for many years and as the town does not currently have a discount supermarket option, we are looking forward to bringing our unique Lidl shopping experience to to the local community.”

"We have held positive discussions with both Whole Foods Market and the landlords, who have both been extremely supportive of our proposition to support Giffnock town centre by bringing this well established retail location back into operation as quickly as possible."

Lidl has experienced continued growth in Scotland over the years and has seen consumers enjoy products sourced from over 60 Scottish suppliers - ranging from quality fruit and vegetables, to dairy and bakery lines -  leading to a market share of
6 per cent in Scotland according to the latest Kantar Worldpanel results.
