The best family-friendly places to pick pumpkins in Scotland for Halloween

Why not plan a family day out and pick your own pumpkins for carving this Halloween?

Traditionally it was a turnip, but these days pumpkins have become a Halloween staple in most houses and it has become a family day out to go and pick your own pumpkins.

Here are some of the best places to do so in Scotland.

Arnprior Farm, Stirling

Arnprior was the first Scottish farm to open a pick your own pumpkin patch in 2015.

Since then, the family-run farm has been inundated with welly-adorned pickers ready to choose their own Halloween treat.

Open for the pumpkin harvest from October, visitors can also enjoy other activities such as a kale maze, quad pods, face painting and chainsaw carving (sounds spooky!)

There are also food, drink and craft stalls and the patch is dog-friendly, making this an ideal day out for all the family.

The farm launched glamping pods, which are individually decorated and kitted out with a cooking appliances, plug sockets and offer access to the private pool and hot tubs.

Tickets for pumpkin picking are on sale now, priced at £14.90 per car.

2025 dates: 11-26 October over three sessions - 9.30am-11-30am; 12pm-2.30pm and 3pm-5.30pm.

After school sessions will run until 30 October.

There will be ASN days on Tuesday 14 October from 12-2.30pm and Thursday 16 October from 3-5.30pm.

After school sessions are: 27-30 October from 3.30-6pm and if you want to visit for the farm’s annual date night hoedown, this is Saturday 25 October.

Tickets are priced at £14.90 per car (with £5 redeemable on a pumpkin), and will go on sale at 11am on Tuesday 12 August. You can buy tickets via Eventbrite

Cairnie Fruit Farm & Mega Maze

This fruit farm is also known for its mega maze, making it an ideal spot to take the kids to this October.

The maze is an artistically designed labyrinth of pathways and blind alleys extending over six acres and will keep the kids entertained for ages.

After the berry season (of which the farm offers strawberries, raspberries, red and blackcurrants, gooseberries, tayberries, cherries and brambles), visitors can get kitted out to pick their own pumpkins of which there’s over 20,000 to choose from.

If you fancy more than one pumpkin and are struggling with the load, there's a handy wheelbarrow available to help with your harvest.

The pumpkin patch opens  on 4 October and visits must be booked in advance - either a morning (10am to 12.30pm) or an afternoon slot (1pm to 3.30pm) and there's a £1.50 entry fee. You can turn up any time in your booking slot and pay for pumpkins picked.

Cairnie Fruit Farm & Mega Maze, Cupar, UK, KY15 4QD

Craigies Farm, South Queensferry

Craigie's is another farm that specialises in all kinds of pick your own fruit and veg.

It is also one of the closest farm shops to Edinburgh making it a great escape from the city.

Selling everything from fruit and veg, milk and dairy products to award winning sausages, Scottish cheeses, local gins and beers, the farm shop is well worth a visit any time of the year.

After picking your own pumpkin, which are available throughout October, why not enjoy lunch or a sweet treat from the on-site cafe while the kids run wild in the play area?

Entry vouchers can be bought online now, ahead of a visit and exchanged for a  basket and a map. Staff will then guide visitors to the best field.

Tickets are from £4 for quiet sessions and £7.50. 

2025 dates: 1-10 October is for PYO pumpkins only.  Visitors can come along to the farm, snap some pics and be one of the first to take one of our pumpkins home.  There will be no additional activities on these dates.

11 – 31 October is when the fun really starts, with activities and seasonal surprises along the way.

Activities at this time include: pumpkin catapult, bale climbs, twisting bale mazes, barrel train rides through spooky tunnels, photo stops, toast marshmallows by the fire pits, and pumpkin carving. There will also be storytelling, roaming characters, live music, face painting, paint ball, axe throwing and funfair rides. If all that leaves you feeling hungry, there will be food and drink stalls on site.

Pumpkins picked are paid for separately and are not part of the ticket price.

Craigie's Farm Deli and Cafe, South Queensferry, UK, EH30 9AR

Balgone Estate, East Lothian

This family run farm, located on the outskirts of North Berwick, is the newest addition to Scotland's pumpkin picking experiences.

Not only do they have a pick your own pumpkin patch but there's also a pumpkin trail, which promises a lakeside adventure with lots of spooky characters to look out for along the way.

On the trail kids can stop at the witches hut, the Crooked Cauldron, which is a pit stop for toasting marshmallows.

They also have a maize maze available as well as food and drink stalls.

Cars, with up to five people, are £18 and the ticket price includes access to the patch, spooky trail and catering village.

This autumn, visitors can explore an even larger patch featuring more than 60,000 pumpkins and squashes across 27 varieties. From classic carving pumpkins to unusual gourds and culinary squashes, the expanded picking village offers something for everyone, whether you’re decorating, cooking, or simply soaking up the seasonal spirit.

To make memories last, the patch is filled with picturesque displays and photo opportunities, providing the perfect autumn backdrop for families, friends and couples alike.

For those seeking a thrill, the Haunted Trail has undergone major improvements for 2025. The 2km route around the scenic Balgone Lakes is now lined with eerie installations, spine-chilling exhibits and atmospheric touches designed to surprise and delight. The ever-popular Crooked Cauldron also returns, where visitors can join Balgone’s resident witches for marshmallow-toasting by the water.

The experience continues beyond the patch and trail. Guests can enjoy the catering zone, with a wide choice of food and drink vans, plus a spacious stretch tent to keep everyone dry whatever the Scottish weather brings. Families will also love the bale play area, where children can let off steam the countryside way.

Pumpkin Festival at Clyde Valley Family Park

This family-friendly park is hosting its annual pumpkin festival in October, which includes a free pumpkin for kids.

Visitors can pick, design and carve pumpkins at the park during the festival. There will also be a fancy dress competition and a Halloween themed hunt as well as plenty of decorations and Clyde Valley’s creepy corridor.

Dates for pumpkin picking run from 11-31 October and, although this is a free event, tickets will need to be registered via Eventbrite.

Valley View At Gouldings

Valley View is holding their popular Pumpkin Picking event again this year, as well as a date night for adults.

Visitors can choose their pumpkins from the outdoor and indoor areas. There’s also Halloween scenes and decorations along the way, meaning there’s lots of photo opportunities.

The team also has carving stations available and you can visit during the day and a night.

This year’s dates are Saturday 4 to Thursday 30 October, including some late nights.

East Yonderton Farm

This farm, close to Glasgow airport offers strawberry picking in the summer, and pumpkin picking in the autumn.

Like the strawberry picking, visitors will need to phone to book the pumpkin picking.

Pumpkin picking dates for this year haven’t been announced yet but last year’s dates were from 12 October, every day till Halloween with five hour and a half booking slots - 9am, 10.30am, 12pm, 1.20pm and 3pm. Tickets were £2 and pumpkins were sold by weight.

Potatoes and other veg will be available to pick as well.

Blair Drummond Safari Park, Stirling

It’s all treats and no tricks at Blair Drummond Safari Park this autumn as the award-winning family destination is gearing up for their Hallowild season with pumpkins, firepits, hay-bale spiders, hay bale play-pit, and a trick or treat trail.

Visitors can also spend time with their favourite animals at the park, from giraffes to penguins.

From 11 – 31 October, visitors can head to the picket fence-enclosed pumpkin patch to choose a pumpkin before toasting some giant marshmallows on the firepits. Tickets are £22.50 for adults and £16 for kids, with under 3s going free.

M&D’s Theme Park Outdoor Pumpkin Festival

The M&D's Pumpkin Festival is back, with all activities held outdoors in the grounds of the theme park.

Visitors can look forward to storytelling from Folksy Theatre, bash a pumpkin game, a pumpkin treasure trail, the Pumpkin Express and the pumpkin patch - where you can pick your own pumpkins.

All activities will take place from 4- 26 October.

Tickets - which are priced at £9.95 which includes a hot drink or £12.50 which includes a pumpkin - must be booked online.

Pick a Pumpkin, Neilston

A relatively new addition to the pumpkin picking scene in Scotland is from this patch in Neilston, close to Barrhead.

As well as picking your own pumpkin for Halloween, visitors can look forward to a play area, an assault course, face painting, glitter tattoos and rock painting. There will also be hot drinks available.

The dates for the 2025 pumpkin picking are 18, 19 and 25, 26 October and you can find out more via their social media.

The Farm Stall Kintyre, Bellochantuy near Campbeltown

This family-run farm has released the dates for pumpkin picking for 2025, which are 25 and 26 October from 10am-4pm. Things are looking good as there has been a bumper crop.

Visitors can also buy farm grown Rooster potatoes, veg and eggs.
