The new stores will bring the total number of the budget retailer's stores in Scottish locations to 78 by the end of 2017.

Plans have been unveiled for new stores to open in Montrose, Dumfries, Auldhouse Retail Park and Drumchapel in Glasgow, and Oxgangs in Edinburgh.

The location of the sixth store has not been disclosed due to discussions over planning permission.

The retailer said it was also keen to grow its range of Scottish-sourced products.

The retailer's Scottish headquarters in Bathgate is also undergoing a multimillion-pound extension to help accommodate its growing team.

It also plans to extend its regional distribution centre in the West Lothian town.

Richard Holloway, managing director of Aldi Scotland, said: "We want to build on the success of 2016 by opening additional stores in new locations in Scotland and work with even more of the best Scottish producers.

"We continue to deliver the highest quality and value, and I am confident that we will strike deals with more Scottish suppliers in the coming year.
