Stephen Fry to host launch of new televised British food and drink awards

The first ever Britsh Food and Drink Awards are set to be televised by ITV next month, with QI and Blackadder star Stephen Fry set to host.

Aiming to showcase the heroes and high-achievers of the British food and drink industry, the event will be held at the Merchant Taylors’ Hall in London’s Threadneedle Street on will be aired Sunday 9th February at 10.15 pm. 

A spokesperson for the awards said: "This long-awaited celebration of the UK’s world-beating culinary talent will honour those who have contributed most to Britain’s remarkable renaissance in food, drink and catering. Awards will include the Outstanding Achievement Award, Best Organic Producer cut and the Heritage Award and even the best chippy."

 Curated by a committee with a "passion for fantastic British food", the awards will feature everything from' haute cuisine and fine dining to down-to-earth street food.

 The program will feature the winners telling their stories of hard work, determination, willpower and success and above all, the quality of their craft.

 The firm behind the awards added that the past few decades have seen an incredible renaissance in the British food and drink industry, with diversity and quality at an "all-time high".

With the Food and drink sector one of the UK’s most vibrant and eclectic industries and more people are choosing to eat out than ever before the awards will honour the fact the British are now globally regarded as a major culinary power, offering first-class training in our world-class catering colleges.

The spokesperson added: "It’s time for us to shed our inferiority complex. Other countries have long been famed for their gastronomic superiority, but is that reputation still justified? Chefs across Britain are now undeniably among the world’s very best.

"There’s simply never been a better time to salute the very best of British gastronomy."

 Produced by Associated-Rediffusion Productions for ITV, The Food & Drinks Awards 2020 in association with Staysure & will be broadcast at 10:15pm on ITV, Sunday 9th February 2020.
