Chaophraya

(4th Floor, 33 Castle Street, Edinburgh EH2 3DN)

Thai food might not be the standard festive fayre but who wants mushy sprouts and dry turkey anyway?

Chaophraya specialises in fine Thai dining and their Christmas menu is something to behold. You’ll sit down in the luscious surroundings of their Castle Street venue, where some rooms give a view over the revellers in the city below.

Choose from a selection of menus designed to keep everyone (yup, even moaning Mike from HR) happy.

Check out their vegetarian choices, including thai veg tacos and yummy curries, or go for the Maenum Chiang Mai to indulge in fresh fish and succulent chicken. Wash it down with their signature cocktails and you’re in for a great night.

Amarone

(13 St. Andrews Square, Edinburgh,EH2 2BH)

Bit of a rowdy crew? Amarone’s private dining room is located in the bank’s old vault so is the perfect spot for keeping everyone in line.

Their fantastic Milanese-style menus make a big change from the usual Christmas dinner, with tasty bruschettas, fresh pastas, and crispy pizzas keeping the most picky eaters happy.

This restaurant is right in the middle of town so it’s great if you fancy a wee tipple after, or if Jim from IT needs poured into a black cab sharpish.

Dakota

(Ferrymuir Retail Park, South Queensferry, Edinburgh, EH30 9QZ)

Feeling a bit classy? Then Dakota is the place for you. Their beautiful private dining areas are the perfect place for a soiree and you can even persuade the big guns to book you an upstairs room rather than flagging a cab.

The food is pretty special too: the chefs will create you a menu dependant on the season, or you can pick your own choices from their popular menu selector. The drinks list is extensive with bottles of wine, or top-class Dom Perignon for a real treat.

(Push the boat out, you’re probably not paying!) Remember though, this is probably not the place to wander barefoot, sobbing about the fact that you’ve still not received that long-promised pay rise.
