APA and Mackie’s whip up buttery and jam flavoured ice cream for True North festival

Aberdeen Performing Arts (APA) has teamed up with Mackie’s of Scotland to produce a brand new ice cream flavour with a local twist.

Renowned ice cream manufacturer Mackie’s is the main ice cream supplier for APA, who tasked the culinary team with creating a new flavour that could be served at True North.

The result is a truly unique buttery and jam flavoured ice cream that will only be available at True North music festival in the city.

Staff from APA, Mackie’s and JG Ross were at His Majesty’s Theatre today (Thursday) to officially launch the product.

APA chief executive Jane Spiers said: “From cookies and cream to bangers and mash; bread and butter to fish and chips, there are some food duos that are a match made in heaven.

"We’re excited and proud to be able to offer our customers a quintessential taste of the North-east with this brilliant buttery and jam combination.”

Yvette Harrison, who will manage Mackie’s upcoming 19.2 ice cream parlour, said: “His Majesty’s Theatre, Mackie’s and of course the buttery, are well-respected classic North-east favourites so it’s great to be working with all three of these Granite City staples.

"We have been experimenting with adding different amounts of buttery and different types of jam to come up with the perfect blend of flavours.

“We can’t wait to treat HMT and Lemon Tree audiences to our new ice cream.

"The team of tasters at Mackie’s think the buttery, jam and ice cream combo is the perfect True North flavour, and if the festival-goers agree it could well become one of the exciting new range of handmade ice cream flavours at 19.2.

“It is also thrilling to be involved with this year’s True North festival thanks to Aberdeen Performing Arts – and we fully expect it to be a hugely successful series of events.”

The exclusive flavour was created by Mackie’s, which is based in the North-east and trades internationally, in the New Product Kitchen on its Aberdeenshire farm, using butteries supplied by local baker JG Ross.

It will be exclusively available at His Majesty’s Theatre and The Lemon Tree during True North, which runs from Thursday 7th to Sunday 10th September.

The festival takes place in venues around the city, including APA-run venues The Lemon Tree and His Majesty’s Theatre.

Headline acts include Public Service Broadcasting, Arab Strap and a double-headliner with Frightened Rabbit’s Scott Hutchison and Kathryn Joseph. Rumours – a very special Fleetwood Mac celebration night, is also on the line-up.

At The Lemon Tree, there’s Wild Beasts, Dutch Uncles, Pictish Trail and a DJ set from Vic Galloway.

In addition to food fusions, APA and Mackie’s have also teamed up to offer a fantastic prize package for one lucky winner.

The parlour, set to open to the public in November, is located an exact 19.2 miles from the Mackie’s Westertown farm, where delicious tubs of ice cream have been made for the last 30 years.


With more than 20 new flavours of ice cream, there will be something for everyone at 19.2 including ice cream lollies, crepes and waffles as well as the exciting new range of Mackie’s artisan chocolates.

Mackie’s has already lined up experienced Yvette Harrison to take on the role of parlour manager and will be recruiting for staff shortly to serve tasty ice cream treats to hungry customers, when the parlour opens its doors later this year.
