'Wild' Scottish distillery to release first Highland whisky - a 'new chapter' for the NC500 location

A craft distillery on the famous North Coast 500 route will soon be making Highland single malt whisky.

Scotland’s newest single malt whisky is about to flow from one of its wildest coastal landscapes, as Badachro Distillery begins production of its own first-ever Highland single malt.

For the first time, a limited number of founders’ casks are being released, with reservations now open for just a 20% deposit.

Badachro Distillery, founded by husband-and-wife team Gordon and Vanessa Quinn, has announced the start of production for Badachro Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky.

The new spirit marks a major milestone for the distillery, which has spent the last 10 years handcrafting award-winning gin, vodka and rum.

Eight years of that has been maturing and finishing sourced single malt whisky. Now, Badachro is preparing to become the only legal whisky distillery on the Scottish mainland between Ardnamurchan and Thurso.

Gordon and Vanessa met at the local inn in Badachro and married just 12 weeks later. This month marks their 30th wedding anniversary.

Their shared passion for Highland craftsmanship led them to build their distillery from scratch - from first idea to spirit running in the stills.

Now, after years of experimentation and maturation of their Bad na h-Achlaise range, they are ready to produce their own single malt.

Whisky production begins in March and Badachro will create only around 70 casks per year, making it one of Scotland’s smallest and most artisanal whisky operations.

Highlights include:

Ardbeg to release cask strength 10 year old whisky - an ‘unforgettable’ dram
  • Small-batch distillation using traditional copper pot stills
  • Extended fermentation and use of heritage barleys for added complexity
  • Experimentation with Highland barley from the Black Isle and diverse yeasts, including Bavarian strains nodding to Vanessa’s heritage
  • Maturation in first-fill ex-bourbon and sherry casks
  • New make spirit at 63.5% ABV
  • Around 25 privately owned casks will be made available each year.

Founders’ casks can be reserved now with a 20% deposit, and are priced from £4,500 for the 125-litre first-fill sherry casks and £6,000 for 200-litre first-fill bourbon casks.

Gordon Quinn said of the new whisky: “We’re producing whisky on a craft scale - about 12,000 litres a year - because our focus isn’t volume. It’s flavour, provenance and a genuine Highland spirit that reflects this extraordinary place.”

Badachro employs eight people and plans to take on a local apprentice as part of its commitment to supporting the region.

While rooted in Wester Ross, Badachro already exports spirits to Canada, Taiwan and Europe, and will expand whisky distribution into Germany, Austria, the Netherlands and Canada.

With its first new make spirit due to flow very soon, the Badachro Highland Single Malt promises to be one of the most distinctive new Scotch arrivals of the decade - shaped by landscape, love, and a craft-first approach.
