The stunning new Highland whisky distillery 'retreat' located in historic glen

Plans for a brand new whisky distillery - one of Scotland’s most remote - have been unveiled.

Founder of the Gin Bothy is starting a new chapter in spirits as she unveiled plans for a new Highland whisky distillery in a remote and historic glen.

Gin Bothy founder Kim Cameron has unveiled an exciting new chapter for the Bothy Brand with the launch of Gunshot Scotch Whisky Liqueur and Gunshot Blended Scotch Whisky (aged 8 years).

Available to buy now, the Gunshot Whisky range will be sold directly from the Bothy in Glamis, the Bothy Larder in Forfar, online, and in select Scottish stockists.

The Bothy Distillery, scheduled to begin operations in spring 2025, occupies a stunning and remote location in Glen Prosen on land managed by Forestry and Land Scotland (FLS).

Adjacent to the King’s estate it is surrounded by the old whisky smuggling and historic drovers’ path to Braemar, the distillery sits in between the Munro twins Driesh and Mayar.

The distillery is a major step to the full utilisation of the buildings at the head of the glen and forms part of FLS’s wider strategy to create new jobs and bring economic benefits to the local community.

Founded by Kim Cameron in 2015, Gin Bothy renowned for crafting premium spirits using traditional methods and local ingredients has grown into one of Scotland’s leading drinks producers, with over 70,000 units sold annually worldwide. 

Earlier this year Kim’s Gin Bothy gin was selected to be included in the Oscars goody bag.

In keeping with their reputation for commitment to sustainable practices, the distillery will be one of the most environmentally conscious in Scotland, with plans for using hydroelectricity and sustainable waste removal processes.

“Everything about the Glen and the distillery is in synergy with our Bothy values of history and heritage, respecting nature’s calendar with a focus on seasonality and sustainability – the botanicals for our gin are foraged in the Angus hills, and our whisky uses locally grown barley.”

FLS Angus Glens programme manager Christine Reid added: “We are excited to welcome The Gin Bothy into Glen Prosen.

“The business has strong local roots that will only be enhanced by moving to the Glen and we anticipate that this new venture will support existing and new jobs in the area as well as fostering sustainable tourism.

“Discussions with several other interested parties keen to set up in FLS Glen Prosen are at an advanced stage and we look forward to connecting more people with the evolving landscape restoration here.”

The Gunshot Whisky range features two offerings: Gunshot Blended Scotch Whisky (aged 8 years) and the Gunshot Scotch Whisky Liqueur, inspired by local legend Old Jock, who enjoyed illicit drams in the Angus glens.

Bringing together experts from the industry to realise the vision, a renowned master blender has joined the Bothy distillery team.  

300 casks are expected to be produced annually at the site which is set to become a unique visitor destination with plans including an immersive whisky retreat, and guided walking and foraging events.

Kim Cameron added: “Our vision for The Bothy Distillery is about more than whisky, it’s about creating a place where people can connect with Scotland’s natural beauty and heritage. We’re proud to be working with FLS as the guardians of the land as we share the story of Glen Prosen Single Malt with the world.”
