Outlander star Sam Heughan’s Sassenach whisky wins big at international awards

The Sassenach whisky has been named best in class at an international spirits awards.

Outlander star Sam Heughan is celebrating even more success for his Sassenach whisky as it has won another award.

The blended whisky was awarded double gold (for the fifth year in a row) as well as being named the best in class in the blended Scotch non-age statement category in the 2024 San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

A double gold award is the highest medal available in the San Francisco World Spirits Competition and is awarded to the entries that receive a gold medal rating by all members of the judging panel.

The award winning whisky is one of a number of spirits in the Sassenach stable, which includes Scottish gin and a tequila.

In a post announcing the win, Heughan also hinted that more drinks launches may be on the cards as he said: “we’re working on a bunch of other really exciting stuff with Sassenach spirits.”

The Sassenach was first launched in America last summer and went on sale in the UK in December 2020.

The whisky is a nod to the nickname Sam’s character Jamie has given his on-screen love interest Claire on the show and realises a dream the Scots actor has had for a long time.

In late 2020 Sam Heughan joined us on our podcast Scran to chat about his whisky, as well as why he chose a blend over a single malt, how it was almost made in America and his re-discovered love of Scotland through filming Outlander.

Early last year Heughan was back on Scran to discuss his Sassenach Wild Scottish gin, life after Outlander and future plans.
