On Friday (the 17th July), Pickering's Gin launched a brand new gin, exactly 68 years to the day that the original Pickering’s Gin recipe was written down on a fragment of paper, dated 17 July 1947. Now, that original Bombay recipe has been precisely recreated, aptly named Pickering’s 1947 (Original Recipe Gin).

The beautifully crafted gin contains all nine botanicals from the original recipe: juniper, coriander, cardamom, cinnamon, fennel, anise, lemon, lime and cloves. The main difference with the 1947 recipe and the classic Pickering’s Gin launched last year, is the addition of cinnamon that replaces angelica.

Matt Gammell, co-founder of Pickering’s Gin said: “Although our classic Pickering’s Gin is based on the same recipe, we carefully tweaked the ingredients to introduce a gin that was more suitable for today’s contemporary palate. The 1947 however has more spice and punch to it and replicates the Indian flavour of the recipe. Like the classic, though there is so much clarity and balance in the mix, and part of the pleasure is identifying all nine botanicals.”

Pickering’s Gin is also delighted to announce that they are again the official gin sponsor of The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, and “1947” will be served to VIP guests from home and abroad offering them a real taste of Edinburgh. This year the theme of the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo is East Meets West, culminating in a parade of talent from 4 continents that will create a show piece event.

Marcus Pickering, co-founder of Pickering’s Gin said: “We are delighted to be the official gin sponsor of The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo again and are excited to be unveiling our new 1947 gin to coincide with the start of Tattoo. Like the Tattoo, 1947 is a combination of flavours from east and west and brilliantly complements this year’s theme.”

“It is such an honour to be supporting The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo again. The history of Pickering’s Gin resonates perfectly with the Tattoo, as our gin is based on an original Bombay recipe - inherited from my late father’s friend.”

Pickering’s Gin is made right in the heart of Edinburgh at Summerhall Distillery, less than a mile from the home of the Tattoo at Edinburgh Castle. It is distilled, bottled, labelled and sold at Summerhall, the former Dick Vet building.

The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo Chief Executive & Producer, Brigadier David Allfrey, said “What a treat! The theme of the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo this year is “East meets West” and when we heard that Pickering’s Gin was going to recreate the original 1947 Bombay recipe we were all very excited. It is an ideal fit with our brand, and we are thrilled to be able to offer our VIP guests to the 2015 Tattoo a truly complete sensory experience. ”

500 Limited edition Tattoo bottles, specially created to commemorate the event, will also be produced featuring a specially designed cartouche and neck tag.
