David Cameron's father in law planning to launch new whisky distillery on Jura

The father in law of former prime minister David Cameron is set to lodge plans to open a new distillery on the Isle of Jura, according to reports.

William Waldorf Astor III, the husband of Samantha Cameron’s mother Viscountess Annabel Astor, made a series of applications to the Intellectual Property Office (IPO) regarding whisky related trademarks at the end of August and beginning of September.

According to the Daily Record, talks are underway with Lord Astor reported to be ready to submit a formal planning application for the new distillery with Argyle and Bute Council later this year.

Lord Astor, who owns the 20,000-acre Tabert Estate on the island, could see his new distillery join Isle of Jura distillery in producing whisky on the island.

The hugely popular Whyte & Mackay owned distillery, which has previously created special bottlings for Lord Astor, currently employs around 15 people and produces over 2 million litres of alcohol a year.

Lord Astor registered the names Astor Whisky and Lord Astor Whisky, as well as Glenbatrick Whisky and Corran River Whisky - both of  which are named after locations on the island.

It has not been confirmed if the Viscount plans to build the new distillery on the estate or elsewhere on the island.
