9 of the most expensive and rare drams available in Scottish bars - including £8000 Macallan and 1979 Port Ellen

From a very rare bottle of Macallan and 1970s Port Ellen to a 40 year old Balvenie, there are many rare whiskies to be enjoyed at bars and hotels across Scotland.

While some are beyond most people’s budgets, some are more reasonable and all offer a chance to sample some of Scotland’s most sought-after whiskies.

‘The Reach’ by Macallan 

In Meldrum House Hotel, in their 800 year old Cave Bar, you' 'll find this very rare bottle of Macallan 'The Reach'. It’ll set you back £8000 dram.

The special dram is housed in the Whisky Club within the Cave Bar where 44 Whisky Club members have their lockers. 

Presented in a mouth-blown decanter, ‘The Reach’ cradles on a bronze sculpture of three bronze hands.

Glenfarclas 1952

At the Mash Tun in Aberlour, you can try this old and rare Glenfarclas 1952, which is £1725 for a 35ml dram.

Balvenie 40 year old

The Balvenie 40 year old has been matured in rare casks and is the work of the distillery's former malt master David C. Stewart MBE.

To try this whisky, head to the Dowans Hotel in Speyside where a dram (25ml) of it costs £495.50.

1979 Port Ellen

Johnnie Walker Princes Street's The Explorers' Bothy Bar is one of the very few places in the world where you can enjoy a dram of exceptional scotch from the Prima & Ultima collection. 

Available by the dram is the 1979 Port Ellen 40-Year-Old from the first release of Prima & Ultima for £600 a dram. 

Macallan M Lalique 2020

The 2020 edition of ‘M’ from the Macallan comes in a Lalique decanter. 

You can enjoy a dram for £740 at the Fairmont St Andrews.

Bowmore 1970 Signatory Vintage Rare Reserve

This Islay single malt Scotch whisky was laid down in September 1970 and bottled by Signatory Vintage.

To try a dram, it’ll cost £675 and it’s also available at the Fairmont St Andrews.

Old Fettercairn 40

Also available at the Fairmont St Andrews is the Old Fettercairn 40 year old.

The Balmoral's Scotch bar is another haven of whisky, and well worth a visit if you're in the capital.

Currently their most expensive, and rare dram, isThe Macallan Red Collection 40 years old, which you can try it for £850 per dram.

Bunnahabhain 40 year old

The Pot Still in Glasgow is home to hundreds of whiskies and is a must-visit for any whisky fan.

Currently their most expensive dram is a 40 year old Bunnahbhain for £290.85
