The news follows the recent announcement that the independent Scotch whisky distiller had signed a five-year partnership with The R&A to become Official Spirit of The Open and Women’s British Open.

Former Ryder Cup Captain Montgomerie, who has recorded 52 tournament victories across the world and became European #1 in 1993 – a position he held for an unprecedented seven years, will work with the distillery to promote the full Loch Lomond product range worldwide, including two limited editions specially created to mark The 147th Open at Carnoustie as well as a Single Cask edition that will carry his name.

The golfing legend, who visited the distillery for a look at the work going on there, said the trip gave him an even greater understanding of the skill and dedication behind the production of the liquid, and drew parallels between the passion he witnessed from the workers at Loch Lomond with that which he sees from his fellow professional golfers on the greens.

When asked about the limited edition single malt that will bear his name, which he will work with master blender Michael Henry on, Colin stated that he was excited to see it released later in the year.

He added that he was also delighted to be given the chance to promote this up and coming Scotch whisky brand around the world.

He said: “I’m a long-time fan of Scotch single malts and so am absolutely delighted to work with the team at Loch Lomond Whiskies who have shown great passion and enthusiasm for producing some fabulous whiskies of great quality and character.

“As a proud Scot I know that Scotland is world-renowned for both our whisky and our unrivalled golf courses. I’m passionate about telling the story of both and was really impressed by the quality, authenticity and diversity of flavours of the Loch Lomond single malts."

Colin Matthews, CEO of Loch Lomond Group, said: “We’re extremely pleased to welcome Monty to our team. As one of Europe’s most successful and passionate players over many years, our partnership will allow us to further develop our presence in golf.

Mr Montgomerie added: "The Open means a lot to me and I felt that this partnership was a good marriage between the two.

"The Open's brand has changed over the ten to fifteen years and it has improved ten fold, and the partnership with Loch Lomond whiskies is a great way to promote these two great Scottish exports around the world."
