HIS poems are still recited by school children around the world and his short but eventful life still inspires thousands of visitors to his home county of Ayrshire each year.

Robert Burns died aged just 37 in 1796 but perhaps remains the most famous Scot ever to have lived, with only legendary medieval warriors like Sir William Wallace or Robert the Bruce able to offer a competing claim.

The Bard of Ayrshire is adored by generations Russians and his works inspired some of the best known American novelists of the 20th century in John Steinbeck and JD Salinger.
