Hardeep Singh Kohli, the celebrity chef and comedian, has launched a chilli eating contest at his new Edinburgh restaurant, VDeep.
The inaugural Deep Heat Chilli Challenge will see competitors take up four rounds, where contestants will be asked to devour hot wings in the shortest time possible.
Each stage gets progressively hotter, culminating in the final round—called 'Wings of Mass Destruction'—that uses a chilli that was, for a time, the spiciest in the world: the bhut jolokia, a.k.a. the ghost chilli.
The championship takes place in Leith's VDeep, a craft beer and curry restaurant that opened in March, on Wednesday 15 July, where nine teams will compete for the right to be hot wing royalty.
Spectators will be able to stuff their faces with more sedate fare: an all-you-can-eat curry buffet as Kohli compères the event.
Kohli said: “When it comes to sport, Scotland are medal winners in anything that involves sitting down – eating is no exception.
“Kicking off with hot wings, the Deep Heat Chilli Challenge embodies the spirit and the spectacle of competitive eating. Expect tears, triumph and even our very own VDeep chilli cheerleaders.”
