City producer the Quirky Gift Library is estimating that around half a million of the sweet treats could be sold by the end of 2015.

Sandra Colamartino worked with chocolatier Gillian Warden, of Castle Douglas, to come up with the novel gift idea, which is for sale through the website Not on the High
Street.

The firm has a core team of five but at Christmas it employs up to 25 people to ensure its festive operation runs smoothly.

Company bosses said they had to work round the clock to get the sprouts – which are made entirely from chocolate and topped with a touch of realistic green colouring – back in stock on Friday.

Ms Colamartino said: “We were taken by surprise last year with the popularity but this year we are blown away.”
