The Admiral Bar, a popular bar in Glasgow's city centre, may be demolished within a few years if a planning application for an office block is successful.
The Waterloo Street bar, which also hosts club nights, has a lease that runs for another 15 years – but the owner has admitted that he might be powerless to stand in the way of a large firm determined to make the plans a reality.
STV Glasgow reports that the planning application would necessitate the demolition of 70-72 Waterloo Street to make way for a multi-use property. 64 Waterloo Street would also be knocked down and refurbished.
Cat White, associate director of planning at consultancy group Turley Associates, said: "If the proposed plans for these buildings do go ahead, the Admiral Bar won’t exist once work is complete.
"It will take several months for the planning application to go through and as it is a listed building, work may take several years to complete."
The venue is owned by Mark Ferrier, who was no plans to shut the venue.
"No, we don't have plans for the Admiral bar to close down as our lease doesn't run out until 2030," he said.
"We will be going along to the planning meeting this month though as we've heard whispers about these developments.
"Nothing can be done without our saying. Realistically though, if it's us against a big company we wouldn't be able to stop them.
"The Admiral is a Glasgow institution and this is our livelihood. However, if an offer was put to us, we might be forced to close and open up elsewhere."
A planning meeting is due to take place on August 20, where the proposals will be discussed.
