Award winning burger business, El Perro Negro have teamed up with a Scottish brewery to launch a zesty new lager.

Alloa based brewery Williams Bros. Brewing Co. have created a special pilsner inspired by and to pair with their favourite El Perro Negro burgers.

The crisp and refreshing classic style pilsner with the added twist of Seville Orange to deliver a subtle citrus bite. Brewed especially to be enjoyed with food (especially burgers) and also gluten free.

The Scottish brewers were always going to brew this new addition with classic Noble hop ‘Saaz’, but they also wanted to add a small Spanish twist as a nod to namesake and friends, El Perro Negro.

Brewer, Ken Duncan also brought his wealth of knowledge to the Williams Bros brew team for the collaboration.

With close connections to the Czech Republic, Duncan is well educated in the ways of the Pilsner.

Speaking of the collaboration, Chris Williams, director at Williams Bros. Brewing Co. said; “Spain is of course better known for producing grapes rather than hops.

"However, a serendipitous encounter with some Seville Oranges on a trip to the fruit market gave us some unusual inspiration.

"Seeing and smelling the aromatic oranges influenced the idea of adding a subtle nuance to a Pilsner.

"And so we ordered up what we could and put it into our freezer store, so we could use it for the beer all year round. And the El Perro Negro pilsner was born.

“Believe it or not, Scotland actually has a long connection with Seville oranges.

"Legend has it that the invention of spreadable Marmalade was created by chance when a boat carrying a load of Seville oranges broke down in Dundee.

"And a resourceful couple (James and Janet Keiller), who ran a sweet and preserve shop made use of it, so it did not go to waste.”

El Perro Negro Founder, Nick Watkins also spoke of his excitement about the launch, saying: “We’re big fans of Williams Bros at El Perro Negro and have exclusively stocked their iconic range in our Woodlands restaurant since it opened in 2019.

"So we were delighted and really flattered when the team suggested a collaboration and putting our name behind this delicious new lager.

"The refreshing citrus notes are the perfect pairing to our burgers and we can’t wait to serve them up together.”

The new El Perro Negro pilsner will be available in 44cl cans, fridge packs and on draft in independent retailers and venues; including El Perro Negro, Woodlands over the coming weeks.

It's also available to buy online now.
