6 Scottish pubs named best in UK by national guide - including cosy riverside bar

A national guide has named its top 100 pubs in the UK, with six in Scotland making the list.

The Good Food Guide has published its inaugural list of 100 Best Pubs in Britain, with the Highland Laddie in Leeds taking the top spot. But a popular Scottish gastropub in a scenic village was right behind it at number two.

Editor of The Good Food Guide, Chloë Hamilton, said: “We went searching for the pubs that nail the drinking and dining side of the equation.

“It turns out the harder you look the more you find, and they’re not all hidden away in the Cotswolds. The Highland Laddie – a city-centre slam dunk – is a very good case in point.”

Despite the doom and gloom picture of Britain’s pubs, with closures currently averaging one per day in 2025, The Good Food Guide is celebrating the nation’s thriving appetite for genuine pubs with proper food and proper beer – and the growing number of venues that are delivering it.

The Scottish pubs that made the best 100 list are: The Kinneuchar Inn, Fife at number two; The Taybank, Perthshire & Kinross at number 59 (which has recently been named in the best cosy pubs to visit this autumn); Applecross Inn, Highlands at 62; The Clachan Inn, Dumfries & Galloway at 64; Kilchrenan Inn, Argyll & Bute at 82 and The Bonnie Badger, East Lothian at 87.
