It’s that time of year again! Last year, I taste tested the major supermarkets mulled wine with my whole family in tow. This year, it’s just me, my husband and the dogs, but we persevered through a lot of mulled wine just to provide the best guide possible this Christmas.
I’ll be honest now, the dogs didn’t pull their weight as much as I’d hoped, they didn’t even get us refills when needed. My second honest confession, compelled from me by the spirit of the season, is that you do you.
People like different things from their mulled wine, this is just down to our specific taste, so even though I’ve put this in our order, I’ve tried to be specific about the taste so that if it’s your vibe, you can go for it.
Now, as Taylor Swift once said, are you ready for it?
A surprise victor. We didn’t get Morrisons last year, so this was a wild card blasting to the top of the list. Rich, fruity and low level spice, this was incredibly delicious.
Nice and smooth, and doesn’t hit your tonsils like an acid bath.
We merely microwaved this in a mug (as we did with all of them to ensure consistency) and it tasted like a German Market in December.

Another beauty, again, quite low level spice which is how I like it.
Rich and fruity, though not quite as rich and luxurious as Morrisons which is why it just missed out on the top spot.
Though extra points for this one as I didn’t have any normal red wine while making a pasta dish and so used a splash of this mulled wine instead.
I know, I know - but I promise you, for reasons I don’t understand, it actually worked really well.

I don’t know what this says about me, but this one was a bit like juice, and just not boozy enough for me.
If it’s too easy to drink, I’m in trouble, but also, if I want juice I would just drink juice. Not wine.
It’s fruity and fun, nice and orangy, but yeah, maybe with a shot of brandy included it would hit the mark a bit better. Good if you’re looking for something a bit lighter though.

Quite similar to Waitrose - and I checked, I said something similar to last year, so sorry for the repetition.
Nice and smooth, and as established, I like them fruity rather than overly spiced, but it just didn’t feel like a mulled wine.
It doesn’t quite have that rich, thick, swirling impact that the top two on the list had.
Again, a gorgeous bottle, and an easy drink if you’re not sure about mulled wine and want something easier to digest.

Now this one is the first one that’s got some proper spice, so if that’s your bag, get on it.
In fact, if the spicier the better, just flip this list the other way round.
Tangy and hits the back of the throat with that clovey hit that many require from their mulled wine experience. Not me though - not Asda’s fault. But not me.

Sorry Lidl. I’m a big fan in general, and I know they won our prosecco list - and again, if spice is your thing, yes, this is the one.
It’s strong and spicy, I found it quite acrid though. The bottle is nice and big, and absolutely no arguments at that price point.

I do hope this is helpful, or at the very least, enjoyable. I had a bit of a sore head the next day, so remember to drink responsibly and have an excellent Christmas.
