Scots bought '13 million Krispy Kreme doughnuts in less than 3 years'

With the news that a new Krispy Kreme store is set to open at Glasgow's Braehead, it has just been revealed that the first Scottish store, based in Edinburgh, sold an incredible 13 million doughnuts in less than three years.

The Sun are reporting that the store in Herminston Gait sold five million doughnuts in its first six months following its opening in February 2013.

The figures have shocked health campaigners with National Obesity Forum spokesman Tam Fry saying: "It's depressing to hear how many have been bought. I dread to think how much sugar will have been consumed in total.

"I just hope that the people buying them are eating them in moderation."

While telly nutritionist, who found the sheer number of sales "absolutely staggering", told the Sun: "If you have an active life, then having one every so often isn't bad. The issue is that people often buy boxes of 12 so then the temptation is to binge."

She added that for those with a poor diet, "eating lots of doughnuts" - with the standard glazed doughnut containing around 220 calories and around 13g of fat - was "a bad idea".
