The week-long event aims to promote areas of natural beauty and get people from around the UK out and into the great outdoors this summer, enjoying some great food and great company.

In Scotland, the five nominees in the race for the title are the Fairy Pools on Skye, Glenkiln Sculpture Park in Dumfries and Galloway, Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park, Pollock Country Park near Glasgow, and the Cairngorms National Park.

The organisers of National Picnic Week have chosen these locations due to their "outstanding natural beauty and historical significance", with the chosen locations offering a broad range of settings, something for everyone.

Adam Cox, founder of National Picnic Week said: "Scotland has some of the most outstanding natural beauty in the UK, which makes it one of the best places for a traditional or contemporary picnic.

"The Fairy Pools won Scotland’s best picnic spot last year, and this year we have more fantastic places nominated from all over the country."

Cox explained that the nominees were chosen due to variables including their "scenic locations, cultural significance and either popularity or reputation as being a ‘hidden gem’".

He added: "National Picnic Week was created to inspire families, friends and couples to celebrate our outdoor locations by taking a picnic. The best days out are a combination of good people, good food and good weather.

"Luckily we’ve been having fantastic weather so far this Summer so if you haven’t already had a picnic this year, get out there while the weather is still good!”
