In a major step towards carbon neutrality, St Andrews’ distiller Eden Mill has announced a major new chapter in the design and production of their bottles.
As of July 2021, the company will retire their signature ceramic bottles across their gin range in favour of a brand new, more sustainable, and more eco-friendly bottle.
Following the recent news that their climate positive distillery and visitor attraction will open in St Andrews in spring 2022, Eden Mill has revamped their gin bottles whilst simultaneously launching nine new gins, therefore greatly expanding their range of products.
The new £10 million climate positive distillery will use biomass plant and field electricity to power stills, and together with the new bottles, should reduce the company’s carbon footprint significantly.
CEO and co-founder of Eden Mill, Tony Kelly explained the move, saying “Standardising our bottle production across all of our gins to this more sustainable design will greatly help us reduce waste, as we continue to push boundaries and move a step closer to a brighter, cleaner, clearer future for our distillery and the spirits industry”.
For the first time in seven years, the brand will distil their award-winning London dry style Original Gin into glass bottles, together with the full range which includes the popular Love Gin and Golf Gin, as well as the nine new premium gins.
The products will be sold in new, lighter standardised crystal cut 70cl bottles which, by design use 18 per cent less glass than industry standard and are more easily recyclable.
The gins launched this week are innovative in their combination of locally sourced botanicals, and draw their inspiration and influences from across the globe.
Some of the flavours included in the range are the Rosa Rosa Gin - a delicate floral gin made from Rosa Canina and Rosa Damascena, as well as the Forager Gin which is made using berries found in the endangered hedgerows of St. Andrews.
The Golden Lore Gin - infused with tangerine and cranberry with citrus and spices - is expected to be in high demand come Christmas shopping season, and fans of the distillery’s best-selling Passionfruit and Coconut Gin will be thrilled to hear that the flavour is back under the new name of Passion Gin.
By launching this range, Eden Mill hope to have created a new gin to suit every palate, each with their own backstory depicted on the bottle with words and a striking woodcut style print.
Eden Mill’s famous Golf Gin and Original Gin have also moved into a new super-premium gin tier known as their Heritage Range, showcasing their own prints of the botanicals used in each gin as well as the story of St. Andrews, with additional products in the collection due to be announced later in 2021.
Tony Kelly emphasised the importance of the prints, saying “At Eden Mill we are passionate about celebrating the best of old and new. Our gins are inspired by our heritage and roots in St. Andrews, and the hidden stories of our home and it is wonderful to see these stories told across our new bottles in beautiful illustrations.”
The brand’s premium new gin range is available to buy from £25 for 70cl (40% ABV), whilst the Original Gin and Golf Gin in their new Heritage Bottles are available to buy for £30 for 70cl (42% ABV) from the Eden Mill website.
