World Gin Day: Five places in Scotland to celebrate

Saturday June 13 is World Gin Day. It just so happens that 70% of the UK's gin is made north of the Border – so what better place to celebrate it than in Scotland? Here are five events that caught our eye taking place this weekend

Scottish Juniper Festival, 12-14 June
Summerhall, Edinburgh
(http://www.summerhall.co.uk/2015/scottish-juniper-festival-2/)

The Scottish Juniper Festival celebrates its second year with a three-day festival in Edinburgh's Summerhall. For £21.50 (£17.50 concessions), Summerhall's elegant courtyard will bubble with expert talks, drinks demonstrations, and gins to imbibe. Visitors will also get to see a working gin distillery in action.

World Gin Day Lunch at Glenapp Castle, 13 June
Glenapp Castle, Ayrshire
(http://www.glenappcastle.com/)

Here's a spectacular liquid lunch at Glenapp Castle (okay, there's food as well). A gourmet three-course meal in the fairytale surrounds of the Ayrshire landmark is bookended by canapés and the castle's own gin cocktail on arrival, and coffee and petits fours (small cakes that resemble French Fancies). There's a Hendrick's Gin-based dessert to look forward too as well. £54 per person. To book, phone 01465 831 212, or email info@glenappcastle.com.

Gin 71, 13 June
71 Renfield Street, Glasgow
(http://www.gin71.com/)

Several bars in Glasgow, particularly in Finnieston and the city centre, do gin well. None serve it as enthusiastically as Gin 71, though. The city's first gin bar is so-called because it serves 71 types of the juniper brew (and there's the address, of course). On Saturday, visitors will be given a whistle-stop tour of the world's finest gins, all from the comfort of the bar.

Hendrick's Gin Afternoon Tea at Muckrach Country House Hotel, 13 June
Dulnain Bridge, Grantown on Spey, Morayshire
(http://www.muckrach.com/)

Things don't get much classier than afternoon tea in a beautiful hotel in the Highlands. On the grounds of the 19th century building, visitors can treat themselves to scones, cakes, jams, and generous lashings of Hendrick's gin. There should be some tea as well. £19.95 per person. Phone 01479 851227 or email info@muckrach.com to secure a place.

Perthshire Gin Festival, 13 June
The Dalmore Inn, Perth Road, Blairgowrie and Rattray, Perth and Kinross
(https://www.facebook.com/events/961958137150085/)

Perthshire's first gin festival, organised by Gin Club Scotland, is great value. For £25, visitors will have access to a generous goodie bag of gins and gin-based literature – information packs on gin tasting and the drink's history are included – and a light lunch buffet, together with a chance to try some more adventurous concoctions. Whisky-edged gin and craft gins are among the delicacies touted by organisers. Tickets can be bought online.
