Scotland's capital is one of the most expensive cities in the UK for alcohol, but there are plenty of pubs in Edinburgh that offer a pint for under £4 if you know where to look.

This pub on South Charlotte Street is possibly home to the cheapest pint in Edinburgh, with Carling, Strongbow and Coors priced at just £1.80 a pint. Located just off Princes Street, it’s a basic place to stop off for a great value drink if you’re in town.

Boasting great views of Edinburgh Castle, this pub is a popular choice for those looking for a cheap drink close to the Grassmarket and Lothian Road, with a glass of wine starting at around £3.10.

The pub shows sport on the big screen and offers a good selection of reasonably priced craft beers and a varied food menu, including plenty of vegan options.

The most attractive of Edinburgh’s Wetherspoons pubs, The standing Order is located within a grand, neo-classical former bank building. You are guaranteed a cheap pint here, with a wide selection of cask ales and draught beers available for around £3. 

Bier Hoose

Halfway down Leith Walk sits Bier Hoose, a German-inspired bar with plenty of continental and craft beers and offers throughout the year. The pub also does German-style food including currywurst, and is a favourite for German expats in Edinburgh.

The outdoor seating area is perfect for enjoying good value drinks on summer days with the house lager at £3.60 a pint and a medium glass of wine costing £4.

The Hebrides

Close to Waverley Station on Market Street, this is a cosy pub with an excellent selection of real ale at a reasonable price, perfect for those looking to settle in with a pint or a dram for an evening of conversation and traditional Scottish music. Expect island prices – around £3.50 to £4 a pint.

Joker and the Thief

Nestled at the top of Leith Walk, this pub named after the Bob Dylan song, has a cosy feel and a good range of craft beers available on tap with pints starting at £3.50 and a glass of wine setting you back £3.25. There is also a quiz night each week and while there’s no menu, you can order pizzas from Origano at the bar.

This small pub does a lot to entice the student market through its doors but that doesn’t impact the quality of its food and drinks. An excellent choice for those looking to crack the £4 pint mark with a variety of beers available on tap, a popular pub quiz and some of the best burgers in the city.

Brass Monkey
