6 of the best places to get fish and chips in Glasgow

Fish and chips are the ultimate dinner treat so we've picked out six of our favourite chippies in Glasgow for you to check out.

Fish and chips, the perfect double act. Combining Scotland's love of seafood with Scotland's love of potatoes to enticing effect.

There are few treats quite like tucking into delicious white cod or haddock, encased in crunchy golden batter, and served with chunky chips fried to perfection with a healthy mix of fluffy potato and crispiness all lovingly covered in salt and vinegar (definitely not sauce!).

Ok, so these days, it's a treat that's probably best kept to once or twice a month but still, when you get the chance to grab a fish supper you know you'll enjoy it.

With that in mind, we've selected our favourite chippies from Glasgow's burgeoning fish and chips scene to help you on your way:

Hooked

This does to the humble chippy what David Bowie did for British music; taking the original formula, shaking it up and somehow creating something magical from those base ingredients.

Grabbing the headlines last year with their roll and fish and chips, the chippy is better known for its inventiveness, attention to detail and focus on a healthier option; ranging from baked fish and using only rapeseed oil for frying through to plenty of veggie options and even frozen yoghurt.

The Fish and Chips are the star of the show though, with a choice of white fish - including the classic haddock and cod - baked or fried and cooked to order. Add to that two choices of batter, traditional or Tempura, with an alternative panko bread crumb should you want something different, and you'll find you really are spoiled for choice.

It's also sparklingly clean, fairly priced and has attentive staff, what more could you want?

Not to be outdone by Shawlands and those southside areas closer to town, Giffnock is holding its own in terms of quality eateries and local chippie Catch is another raising the game for fish and chips.

So much so that it was no surprise that demand saw them extend their empire to Netherlee with the launch of their second shop (we are keeping our fingers crossed for one in the city centre soon).

Serving food that you'd expect in a high end restaurant, the humble fish and chips that is their staple take-away option hasn't been forgotten about as it's also been elevated to gourmet status.

Huge pieces of freshest haddock, cod and halibut - and we mean fresh, they source and cook to order only fish from sustainable Scottish coastal fisheries - side by side with the chunkiest twice cooked chips, trust us, you'll not be disappointed.

Old Salty's

Aiming to 'make a fish supper feel special again', Old Salty's have updated the traditional menu but kept a classic feel with corned beef butties and deep fried haggis happily sitting side by side with Calamari and Chicken Schnitzel suppers.

The true proof in the pudding though is the quality of their cooking and their freshly made fish and chips wouldn't look out of place on the plates of any of the neighbourhood's best restaurants.

El Perro Negro and Ka Pao team up for kitchen takeover in Glasgow 

We swore when writing this that we wouldn't crack out any old clichés but this chippie truly is a hidden gem. 

Somehow secluded - despite being located just off of one of Glasgow's busiest streets - this excellent little restaurant is housed on the first floor of Glasgow’s iconic McCormick Printers building and is rightly considered to be the best chippy to go to in the centre of town.

This is the kind of eatery where you'd take your mother for Fish Tea on a Sunday or invite your boss for a business meeting and while they offer traditional Scottish fare such as haddock and cod,  you'll also find other more unusual fish like sea bass and coley and of course, the couldn't be fresher, catch of the day.

You'll wonder why you didn't try harder to find it.

Philadelphia

If you have ever been a student or a local in the west end then you'll have heard of the legendary 'Phili', which in our view, serves the best roll and chips in the city.

A favourite with Kelvinbridge locals, the Phili is situated near the bustling underground and has been known to keep everyone happy, from the fussiest of foodies through to drunkest of students, all will agree that their fish and chips are delightful.

This family-run takeaway is regularly queued out the door and they aren't afraid to try new things judging by their recent deep fried twinkies experiment, but it's their classic fish and chips that really shows they are the best in the west (end).

Salt & Vinegar

The arrival of Salt & Vinegar to Kilmarnock Road was a timely one as outwith Hooked in Mount Florida, there was a dearth of good chippies in the Shawlands area.

Thankfully S & V offer not only an awesome take away menu featuring Haddock (in traditional batter or panko beadcrumbs), cod, lemon sole, calamari and scallops, but also a nautical themed sit in restaurant that will get any would-be pirates, fishermen or mermaids right in the mood for some delicious seafood.

Don't worry they do plenty of other chip shop classics, pastas and burgers for those not in the mood for seafood.
