PETA has finalised its list of the Top 12 Vegan Sweet Treats across the UK, and scooping a coveted spot is popular Edinburgh cafe The Caffeine Drip, whose delicious egg- and dairy-free options include sweet French toast covered with maple syrup and topped with "bacon" strips.

"The Caffeine Drip's delectable cruelty-free French toast makes it possible to indulge your sweet tooth while also being sweet to animals," says PETA Director Elisa Allen.

"As all the compassionate eateries on PETA's list prove, choosing vegan treats today is a piece of cake."

Rounding out PETA's list are Vx in Bristol, The Lady Luck in Canterbury, Science Cream in Cardiff, Rabbit in Exeter, Our Kitchen in Liverpool, Yorica! in London, Ice Shack in Manchester, Doughnotts in Nottingham, Luna Rossa in Sheffield, and ASK Italian and Shakeaway, which have locations across the UK. Each winner will receive a framed certificate.

PETA – whose motto reads, in part, that "animals are not ours to eat or abuse in any other way" – notes that the consumption of eggs and dairy foods, which are high in cholesterol and saturated fat, contributes to the UK's obesity epidemic, which is linked to many of the country's top killers, including heart attacks, strokes, diabetes, and cancer.

Not only are plant-based meals better for our health and the planet – since animal agriculture is one of the biggest contributors to climate change – they also spare millions of animals the horrors of factory farms every year.
