The couple, who wish to remain anonymous, had no idea how rare their dram was until McTear's whisky expert, Laurie Black, caught sight of the miniature bottle and realised they were in possession of one of the world’s most expensive whisky miniatures.

Laurie said: "They had quite a few interesting bottles, but the Laphroaig immediately stood out.

"The couple actually said that if we didn't think the miniatures were worth anything they would just throw them out. I think they are quite pleased they decided to seek an expert opinion.

“The 20 Under Proof miniature, which dates to the 1960s, is extremely rare and we knew it would attract a lot of interest from collectors."

When the bidding started at McTear’s Rare and Collectable Whisky auction, it was clear it was going to make a good price.

“The fierce bidding showed just how eager some whisky enthusiasts were to add it to their collection, with the bottle finally selling to a buyer in Scotland for £830. In total the couple’s collection of miniatures sold for £2,100.

"Although the public are now more aware of the price of antiques due to the number of TV programmes on the subject, we still see a lot of very surprised and happy faces when we carry out valuations.

I would say it is definitely worth having a look in the back of that drawer or cupboard for anything that looks a little unusual. You just never know what you may find.”
