Most whisky drinkers still prefer single malts and Islay is the favoured region, according to our whisky survey.

Over 650 people answered a range of questions about our national spirit in our survey with the results detailed below.

Here are some of the highlights:

  • Over 50 per cent of our respondents were under 50 with 20% aged between 18 and 35
  • Whisky remains a male-orientated drink with 82.3% of those who responded being male
  • Most preferred drinking their whisky neat or with a dash of water
  • Despite blends still far out-selling malts, 83.8% of our respondents said they preferred drinking single malts
  • Islay was the favourite region with 36.4% of responses

The growth in popularity of Irish whiskies was also shown with it being the most popular whisky outside Scotch - above US and Japanese whiskies.

Our respondents were a sociable bunch with 66.8% preferring to drink whisky with friends and family.
