For those looking to dine out...

Sol Y Sombra

Currently ranked as the number one restaurant of nearly 300 in Dundee on TripAdvisor, “Sun and Shadow” takes the art of tapas meals to Broughty Ferry residents. Faithful to the Spanish tradition of tapas dishes, there is no set menu. Instead, customers advise their waiter of their dietary preferences and requirements, before being presented with an array of suitable dishes to choose from.

With the quirky “menu” offering variety every time you visit, Sol Y Sombra seems to have captured the imagination of Dundee diners, with over 1,000 rating it as “Excellent” on the reviews website. Such glowing public acceptance may make it hard to get a table in time, though, so you might have to wish for someone else’s heartbreak in order to get a cancellation.

For a romantic walk...

Camperdown and Clatto country parks, Templeton Woods

The vast Camperdown country park on the edge of Dundee has several different walks to offer those who fancy a secluded stroll through a great natural setting.. Combined with neighbouring Templeton Woods and Clatto Country Park, Camperdown is within easy reach of the city and is a mere three miles from the centre of Dundee.

Damp conditions can result in boggy mud, however, so if the weather’s less than perfect. the neo-classical Camperdown House is worth a visit. No matter which green space you choose, it’s a good way of getting to know your date without constant interruption from mobile phones - and walking will help work up an appetite, too.

A little bit of theatre...

Dundee Rep Theatre

Cinema just won’t cut it with your date? You can get a much more interactive evening at the theatre by watching the performance at the Dundee Rep. Performing from 8pm tonight, the dancing troupe will attempt to explore the relationship between reality and surrealism through the power and beauty of the human form.

There’s still a selection of tickets available for both shows, priced at £16 per person.

For some pre-dinner drinks...

Jute Café Bar

Why do we eat fish on Good Friday? Christian meat abstinence explained - and recipes for fish and chips at home

Right in the centre of Dundee’s cultural offerings lies the Jute Cafe Bar at DCA. Housed in a converted brick warehouse, Jute is dripping with industrial cool illuminated by tall windows. It’s a quiet place to to catch up with friends through the week, but it can also double as a racuous venue during the weekend as various DJs take to the decks. With Valentine’s Day falling on a Sunday this year, though, it’s likely to be a quiet and intimate affair at Jute - perfect for both pre-theatre drinks or as a stylish spot to spend the evening.

It isn’t just about the atmosphere, though, as there’s also a restaurant and cinema on-site to distract you from the myriad of lagers, beers and cocktails on offer to suit all budgets.
